Who actually buys microdramas?
Almost nobody sells a microdrama the way people imagine it: emailing a link to a platform and waiting. The buyers in short form vertical drama are studios and networks that programme their own slate, and they acquire the same way film and television have always been acquired, through distributors who represent a catalogue.
Urban Operas is a buyer. We produce our own series and we acquire outside vertical drama that fits the slate. What we do not do is take open uploads from the public, and no serious platform does, for reasons that have nothing to do with gatekeeping.
Why you cannot upload straight to a platform
The blocker is rights, not taste. A platform that streams your series is publishing it, and publishing something you do not have clear title to is the kind of mistake that ends companies. Before anything goes live, someone has to verify that the person delivering it actually controls what they are delivering.
That verification is what a distributor or aggregator does. They confirm chain of title, check the files meet technical standards, and deliver in a format the platform can actually ingest. It protects you as much as it protects the platform: a clean chain of title is what lets you sell the same series again in another territory later.
What a buyer looks at first
The first ninety seconds, and whether the second episode makes itself necessary. In a format where every episode is about a minute, retention is the entire business. A series that loses people at episode three has a writing problem no marketing budget fixes.
After that: is it genuinely vertical, shot for a phone rather than cropped from a horizontal master, and is the audience it was made for a real audience rather than an imagined one.
What to have ready before you pitch
Know what rights you hold and in which territories, and be able to show it. Have the highest quality masters you own, not a compressed export made for social. Know your episode count and your runtime per episode.
